Dans ce film d'époque, Kidman campe une aristocrate anglaise appelée Lady Sarah Ashley. Durant la Deuxième guerre mondiale, elle prendra le contrôle d'un ranch situé en Australie. Un cow-boy du pays (Jackman) l'aidera à conduire le bétail d'un bout à l'autre de la propriété alors que la ville de Darwin, située tout près, risque d'être bombardée par les Japonais.

L'amour naîtra entre ces deux personnes issues de milieux différent
